My story…

I began speaking incidentally, or so it would seem. I always felt that I was anything but a speaker. For heavens sake, I had a million reasons why *I* was the least likely candidate to be called by God as a speaker. But, that message on my heart was exploding within. My heart just ached for those who were struggling with the exact things that I had walked through with God. I still had my doubts about ME being a speaker, but as I began to speak, everything fell into place perfectly, my business took off, and we never looked back. This “incidental” speaker was speaking for the glory of God. Who could figure?

It was not long until we were booked solid. I loved it. I love nothing more than connecting with Christian women and helping them troubleshoot the areas of their lives that hold them back from living the life of their dreams. Speaking provided that ministry for me.

We were on the road every week of the year but 4 weeks–holidays. Many times I spoke for anywhere from 3-5 groups per week. I learned so many essentials for not just the basics that you can hear from every other program out there on how to get started speaking, but I also learned things that only God could teach me–things that gave me great success on the speaking circuit , great success in business,  AND success at home with my family, the whole reason that I do what I do.

Of course, there are more ways to speak than just hitting the road. In fact, in this economy, you HAVE to diversify even within your own business or you will not be in business or ministry for very long.  There are ups and downs in every business, so often you only hear about the UPS. Well, the “downs” are just as important as the “ups” and only someone who cares about YOU will give you the truth AND share their own lessons. Well, back to my story…

While we loved it, you can imagine the strain for our entire family. It was A LOT of hard work to set up and tear down our traveling store all in ONE day, sometimes more than once per day. It was A LOT of stress making sure that we made it there EARLY, in spite of weather, traffic, family sickness, etc. I learned so much about ministry, business and speaking that I could not have learned any other way. I loved it, but it was hard.

It was hard on me physically. I cannot count  the number of times that I was booked as a keynote speaker and booked to speak 6-8 times in one day. All of those sessions on my feet with all of my energy pouring out into each and every session. That was not only tough on my body, but it was very difficult to even eat, much less take good care of my family–the reason that I was running a business at “HOME” in the first place.

Then, there was the tough part to admit–the money! Yep! My husband had no qualms in admitting that the bottom lines were not always good.  I did. I felt called by God. I was doing it ALL for the glory of God.  He always provided amazingly. We were never left hungry or stuck without a comfortable place to stay and a way back home, BUT, I justified the events that ended in the “red” as being “ministry events” even though, honestly, they were the very events that were keeping our ministry from going forward. They were zapping all of the “extra” that was set aside to minister to others. And, bad news–very few of the promised checks ever arrived quite the way that they were promised–either they were sorely insufficient and far less than the group committed or they never came. It was tough, but I loved these women who packed the pews. However, I KNEW that I needed a solution for plugging that hole.

A Pivotal Moment that Changed EVERYTHING…

I remember dinner after one event as if it were a few moments ago. It was a pivotal moment for me. It was a moment that changed the direction of my speaking business and ministry forever.

I was having dinner with dear friends. We were chatting in our typical entrepreneurial way–brainstorming new directions, sharing things that we were working toward, and firing each other up. I shared a vision that I had for my ministry that was not totally fleshed out, but it was the perfect answer for me and others who were like me out there. I had no idea that this “dream” would become a reality in just 6 short months.

I had already been “dabbling” in ways to provide my audios for those who could not join me live.

One of my sweet mentors had shown me how to record my workshops and set up my own tape ministry (yep, this dates me). I had been doing that for years alongside of my live workshops. It had already been very profitable. In fact, my tape ministry had funded many of the events and conferences that did not pay their bills.

At this point in my story, I had also been “dabbling” in some of the new technology for online audio. I had no idea that God was using my typical “push the limits of technology” bent to create NEW WAYS of ministering through the internet. Now, you guys may not realize this, but this was before podcasting. This was way back at the beginning of teleseminars. I wanted to offer my sessions online for my customers around the world. In fact, this goes back to my crazy dream…

That evening with my friends, I shared my dream of creating the “perfect business” for speakers. It was funny, but although there was no way to do a “perfect event” online. I had a vision for a truly ULTIMATE business. I could “see” a business built around sharing my message in online classes, events, webinars, retreats, and even an online radio show! My vision was to offer the option for people to gather together in an accessible place and share together. I could see it all clearly, even though at that time there was not any technology that could handle that type of business. I could even see hosting retreats and events with a team of my best business pals and put on the ULTIMATE event:

• All of us in ONE PLACE at once
• Accessible to those who cannot travel far from home.
• Reasonably priced for attendees so they had money left over to invest in products, coaching, and continuity programs–for deeper ministry.

I only dared to dream about something that could help with the big headaches that made ministry and business on the road sooo tough:

• Set-up and breakdown of our booths
• Exhausting hours
• GAS (Seen those prices lately–back then they were less than $1.50 per gallon! REALLY!)!!!
• Parking (especially with a big truck and trailer)
• Hotels (not just the cost, but also FINDING a good one)
• Eating on the road, or even worst for my health, missing meals!
• And, worst of all, time away from family–the reason we do what we do!

I could see it like it was a reality. But, it wasn’t at that time. It was just a dream.

Until 6 months later when I began to hear about podcasting! REALLY! I immediately jumped into podcasting. And, I used it to a level that is still offering the perfect model for taking care of customers around the world, regardless of their struggles with technology. Also, right around that time, we began to see some companies stepping up with software that enabled live webinars online. It was clunky. OH! It was clunky. I still say that it taught me the bit of patience that I DO HAVE. I had to be patient. I had to have good systems. I had to communicate clearly with customers and train them  so they knew what to expect when the tech-problems hit and so they could navigate the tech-problems right alongside of me. It was PERFECT training for me and my business. And, it was the perfect solution to really take my business uplevel.

Now, I love being on the cutting edge, but I do have to take you back to what was going on in my head that was really the hard part. It was not the techie-stuff.  I am not one to grumble. I seriously like to keep my focus on the BRIGHT SIDE. If there is not a bright side, I toss things around in my brain until I can find a solution that IS on the bright side. ha! My greatest struggle at that time was stepping out into the unknown. Traveling is tough but I KNEW IT. Many of you probably know all too well exactly what I am talking about. I had my own systems that helped me navigate the stresses and problems that commonly arose when I was speaking on the road. I KNEW how to make it happen, even with trials and troubles on every hand. What I DID NOT KNOW was how to bridge the gap and move my “bookings” online. I may have disliked the constant stress of being on the road, but REALLY–WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?  How else can you make it in business? Don’t you HAVE to travel to stay in business as a speaker? Don’t you have to GET OUT THERE? Isn’t it an absolute?” Boy, did those thoughts bombard me as God moved me into the next season of my ministry/business. More on that in a bit…

I KNEW what God was calling me to do, but it was risky! I could not “see” how it would work. NO ONE had done anything else beyond the same old, same old. At that time, if you did not hit the road and show up to the big events, you were FINISHED! You were left-behind. You were forgotten.

However, God took me back to my priorities. Yep, they lined up like this:

• 1st–God. Having time and energy to build a passionate, addictive, contagious relationship with Him. Letting Him radically change my life day-after-day!
• 2nd–my husband, Harold. Pouring my very best into my relationship with Harold. Having nothing in my life that caused me to neglect him or push his needs aside.
• 3rd–my children, Matthew and Elisabeth. Not having anything that pulled me away from teaching, training, and mentoring them. Having my first-fruits going into them.
• 4th–my home and home business. All God brought across my path through both.

If I had stepped to up the call to speak for the glory of God, why was everything so difficult? Why was I getting ripped off by conference coordinators and convention committees? And, what was going on with my business? Somehow, my business was like an unruly infant, demanding ALL I could give and often, more! I was lost in the “on the road rat-race” and could not seem to get out without “professional suicide!” Something had to change, but what COULD change?

This is where I was when God brought me all the way home!

YES! ALL THE WAY HOME!

God opened up the door and moved me toward offering online  classes, webinars/chats, seminars, retreats, and events. They were exactly what I was looking for–the perfect business. Oh! The ULTIMATE BUSINESS!

Not only were they perfect for me, but they were perfect for my customers as well! Obviously, I needed to come home and take better care of myself and my business. But, online classes, seminars, retreats, and events were perfect for my customers as well.

My customers are primarily mothers. Moms are busy. It is hard for them to break away from the demands of their homes. Not to mention, it is expensive to travel to the most economical events–food, lodging, gas, parking. Online speaking is perfect for my customers because I GO TO THEM wherever they are in the world. They only have to carve out time to tune in–most could homeschool their children and care for their homes while learning with me. It was the perfect option! THE ULTIMATE speaking business!

Also, it was exactly what I was looking for and in perfect timing. My children were in their last few years of high school. I know that a lot of people talk about how tough it is to travel with little children, but teens are even tougher, if not impossible to travel with! My teens wanted to be a part of things like musical theater, church missions, etc. Traveling while balancing the demands of my own family was working less and less for me. I sure didn’t want to leave my family behind while I traveled, but I needed to keep on ministering and the model had to shift and adjust to our family-life and the changing times.

Remember, my business was a FAMILY business, a HOME business. I needed another option. God led me to the perfect option! It even plugged the holes for those groups that needed me, but were just not profitable enough for me to hit the road and go to them. It was the perfect solution!

Oh! That is not all! . I set up Talk-a-Latte, my own retreat center that also offers a monthly membership for my customers to join my Talk-a-Latte Mommy Club. Talk-a-Latte and my Talk-a-Latte Mommy Club together have produced over 200 audio sets (and counting!) and bring in revenues that are in the six-figure range all by themselves–that is just one website and one “branch” of my business.

Not only did I begin my classes, seminars, and retreats, I also used the same systems to begin my own radio shows online. It has been a super way to reach out and minister to people. Mom-to-Mom Radio Show is ending its 7th year. It has been a featured show at Blog Talk Radio. We have over 5,000 downloads each week from that show. We reach over 35,000 people on its mailing list every month. It met a need.  I loved it so much that I began  Writer’s Radio Show in a totally different market. It became a featured show at Blog Talk Radio in just 7 months. I love it! BEYOND MY DREAMS…and all the way home!

Remember, my vision for the perfect speaking business and perfect event with my friends on the line-up? Well, imagine my delight when I offered my “Ultimate” online events. I founded and hosted the Ultimate Homeschool Expo, Ultimate Women’s Expo, andUltimate Writers Expo for years.

For each of those events, I did exactly what I once dreamed, but even better! I brought all of my friends together in one place to teach, but even better, we went directly into homes around the world–over 155 countries! Last year, just one of our events reached over 9,000 attendees, not counting those who checked out our Preview Chats. Exceedingly, abundantly, above and beyond what I could have ever asked for or imagined! And, we are still growing.

It doesn’t take you very long to do the math–9,000 attendees at $39.95 each is very nice for my business bottom lines. Sure beats all of the expenses that we struggled with on the road! In fact, now there is no issue with affording the travel on the road, even though the expenses have sky-rocketed over the past 10 years. My business and ministry are in a place that I could only dream of.  Offering online classes, retreats, events, webinars, and radio shows has changed my business completely!

I have run a consistent and growing multi-six-figure business from home with online events, seminars, and classes for years now. I don’t even offer my products in any format other than digital format. I only travel for events or seminars that God confirms are His will for me. And, now those DO pay their bills. Most of the time, I host everything from my home, wrapping that time around the demands of my own family. I live the life that I dreamed of when I began my business/ministry years ago.

God weaned me from “the way everyone else does it” bit-by-bit and now everything I do is in MY TIME, the way that works best for ME, and from the comforts of MY HOME (or a hotel, if I am on the go with my family!). I am truly a HOME BUSINESS. I live the life that I dreamed! And, funny thing, the past 10 years I have not only run my business in profit, but I have paid off over 100,000 in debt and grown my business exponentially!

I was all of the above, and the chats have lifted my spirits, taught me, given me fresh vision, turned my heart and face to God, given me practical, hands-on ideas, and introduced me to some of the greatest cyber-girlfriends who are kindred spirits on this journey!

The Talk-a-LatteChat I did with Cindy was a great experience! Cindy is so upbeat and energetic she could probably make bean soup sound exciting! I represented my company In the Hands of a Child. We create ready to assemble lapbook-style Project Packs and that is what we discussed on the chat. Not only was the chat a relaxed and fun afternoon, we also acquired many of our good customers from it! I still have people email me and say they heard me on Cindy’s Talk-a-Latte!

Talk-A-Latte chats have been such a blessing to me. They have helped me to keep my focus on the things that God has called me to do. They are also filled with practical ideas to make being a wife, mom,and homeschooler so much easier. My husband has nicknamed me “Ipod Woman” because I always have my mp3 player attached to my ear listening to the latest chat while I’m doing my housework and while I go to sleep at night. He has even noticed a change in my attitude and heart because of all the encouragement from the chats. I highly recommend them. They are life changing!

Wow, Cindy, what a ministry you provide with the Talk-a-Latte Chats! With my schedule, I rarely get time to attend Mom’s Nights or events. Listening in on these chats with like-minded women on topics that cover the spiritual, homeschool, and family gives me that rejuvinating boost I so desperately need at times! It not only refreshes the soul, it gets me excited to put new ideas into action. With how late I work on our business, I’m at my desk until the wee morning hours. I LOVE going to the archives to re-listen to the topics. With tea in hand, it’s an enjoyable time to cover things I may have missed the first time around. Each time an announcement shows up in the e-mail, it’s like opening a present with anxious anticipation…what’s the topic going to be this time???

The Talk-a-Latte Chats, Bible Studies and Seminars have been a timely blessing in my life. You won’t leave the chats without being encouraged and built up in Jesus Christ. The Talk-a-Latte Homeschool Seminar Series provides what local support groups often leave out and that’s time for learning new ways to homeschool using easy, do-able and enjoyable lessons and fresh learning ideas. Cindy is just overflowing with sound Biblical teachings and if that’s not enough, the mommies who are present will seek to answer questions and help you in any way possible, all in the privacy of YOUR own home! Cindy often invites the best speakers and guests. The ideas she and they present are ENDLESS! From household organization tips to lapbooks, holiday planning and marriage helps! It’s not always possible to attend conferences when one of your favorite speakers will be there. Cindy’s Talk-a-Latte chats have bridged that gap for me. Cindy is not just a distant, respected speaker and teacher. Via the internet (and the Lord’s enabling), she has become a much beloved friend and mentor in my life. May our Lord continue to Bless you abundantly Cindy!

Cindy, I just had to email you and tell you that Lucia is speaking directly to my heart, and the holy spirit is ministering through her to me. I can hardly stay in my seat. Just wanted to let you know that not only was I blessed this morning, so was my daughter Abby (10yo). She’s not feeling well and was just laying in bed. During the show, she came down saying she didn’t want to be alone and your voice and Catherine’s made her feel a little better. Watching her face, I could see her mind spinning and taking in what was being said. For me, it’s been a rough week getting hit from several angles and I knew this morning I needed my spirit soothed. I spent time in God’s word, prayed some, then it was time for the show. I was ministered to and soothed. Plus, given several things to ponder through the day! Thank you and God bless you. ~Bobbi

Each week when I get in on the Talk-a-Latte Chats, I get inspiration to encourage me in my priorities for my homeschooling. Cindy always manages to direct our attention to the heart of homeschooling — reaching the hearts of our children and teaching them the ways of God.

I have been inspired, encouraged and challenged by the Talk-a-Latte Chats. I would highly recommend this forum to any Christian ladies, but particularly those who are becoming discouraged with homeschooling, or who need a fresh perspective. It’s amazing how one word can change an attitude, a dream, a desire and get you back on track. Dear Cindy and Lorri, I want to thank you for doing this series. I am coming in a little late. I finally listened to the very first Talk-a-Latte interview with Lorri and just so appreciated the topics covered and the sweet spirit of you both. After listening to this interview, I signed up for the seminar. It took all night to download the mp3 of the first “R” session and I listened to it this morning. All I can say is…”wow…ouch…oh Lord here I come!!!” I have struggled with a consistant “quiet time” all my life and recently have felt feelings of being overwhelmed with homeschool, with keeping our home clean, with child training…the list goes on. I have been sidetracked…and I know the Lord is going to use this seminar to speak to my heart. And as Lorri stated…not just speak to me, but change me…I must obey what He is teaching me. One thing that I have been doing recently in my quiet time is choosing a book of the Bible to read. Each day I read one chapter. In my journal I record a verse or two that really spoke to me and use this verse to meditate on throughout the day. I then write down in my journal what this verse is saying to me – how I am going to apply it to my life. I then write out a prayer to the Lord. I look forward to using Lorri’s tips for Bible reading, Bible study, and the meditating and memorizing too. I know that the Lord is going to do great things in me during this series! I regret that I will probably not be able to participate in many of the chat times (we are leaving for Washington on Thursday and will be gone for two weeks), but I will be downloading the listening to the series and doing whatever “assignments” are given. What can I say…. the Talk-a-Latte Chats have been AMAZING!!! I have learned so much. I have become a better wife, mommy, and keeper of my home. The lessons I have learned have been PRICELESS!!!! I don’t want to miss a single one!

Talk-a-Latte has been such a blessing to our entire family. It is wonderful to hear the wisdom of Cindy and experienced homeschool Moms and then be able to blend that wisdom into our homeschool. God has used this program as a tool to further enhance our school studies. The women who subscribe are mothers who are interested in being the best teachers to their children. This show allows us to chat “live” and brainstorm with each other. Their ideas have been so-o-o helpful!A couple of times, I have been unable to participate live but I have been able to download the program and listen at my own convience I thank the Lord daily for Cindy and The Rushton Family Ministries. They are a gift from above!

I appreciate the ministry that Cindy has so much . . . and am so excited for the Ultimate Women’s Expo! My best friend and I are separated by miles and can’t visit the way we’d like. BUT we are both attending the Ultimate Women’s Expo “together” and then will share what God is speaking to us. The chats have been a breath of fresh air. I so love getting them. I also do the seminars and I am in a rural area with very few other homeschool moms and far from a support group – I have gotten encouragement, been challenged, and new ideas. I could go on and on. Best of all cindy always brings me back to God’s word and encourages me in my relationship with God and then with my family. This doesn’t cause me to be divided it helps me keep my focus and is well worth my time. Cindy is a joy and I feel like shes sitting in my kitchen visiting with me! THank you Cindy for doing what God has called you to and encouraging me to do the same.

I really do not know how I ended up on Cindys website one day last July or August, but I do know that it was the leading of the Lord. I had wanted a “New and Fresh” aproach to our school and had been reading about Charlotte Mason over the Spring and Summer. When I started to read through Cindys page I was amazed at the wealth of information and encouragment that I found not only for Home Educating but also on topics as loving our husbands and Godly motherhood. I also found Talk-a-latte!!! My two favorite things Coffee and Good fellowship. You sit down in the comfort of your own home with a cup of coffee or tea and instantly you are surrounded by a community of ladies who all love the Lord and desire to listen to His leading …Wow! I never knew that there was anything like this out there! I always come away from a talk-a-latte session refreshed and with a desire to seek the Lord for His direction and a desire to live a deeper walk with our Heavenly Father. Cindys sincerity to see others grow in their relationship with God and in their roles as wives and mothers is seen and heard in everthing she does or has written. I have recomended Talk-a-latte to many young moms who are just getting started in Homeschooling, but I also have highly recomend it my veteren homeschool friends. We all need a spiritual oasis in our lives that we can come to, drink from, and leave refreshed with new insights, encouragement and fellowship. Talk-a-latte has become one of my favorite “Oasis”

Get your house in order! WOW!!! The 5R’s for the Homeschool Mom wil really help you get your life together. Starting with our personal quiet time with the Lord. The first session really hit home and reinforced the importance of our time personally with God. I can’t wait to hear the next sessions. They are sure to be God inspired!

Wow! The study sessions have been such a blessing for me – really opening my eyes to how I relate to my children through my life and my homeschooling and helping me to teach their hearts, not just train their behavior. Thank you so much, Cindy!!

I just wanted to say that I have just loved the Talk a Latte chats from Cindy Rushton and her guests, it just keeps getting better every time. It’s so much fun and a real blessing to be able to get such a wealth of experience in one place from moms and Cindy. Living overseas, the audios especially (since the timing for the “Live” talks often is late at night) have been such a blessing to me. The topics really speak to my heart and give me a nudge in the right direction. Cindy, your cheerful voice and enthusiasm are definitely contagious.
